Decorative Embroidery Stitches

Almost all kinds of embroidery stitches are decorative embroidery stitches. Embroidery is basically just any decorative stitch. There are decorative embroidery stitches from all over the world. There are two main kinds of embroidery. One kind of embroidery is called counted-thread embroidery. The other kind is called free embroidery.

As one might expect, counted-thread embroidery must be done on a reasonably thick and evenly textured fabric, like cotton or linen because each stitch is made by counting over a specific number of threads while making each stitch. Decorative embroidery stitches like the ones made in free embroidery, however, are not restricted to the positions of individual threads and can, therefore be done on more delicate fabrics, like silk.

Many different materials can be used to add further detail to embroidery. Decorative embroidery stitches can be made with accents made out of plastic, glass, wood, stone, and metal. Almost anything that can have a hole put though it can be used in decorative embroidery. The stitches themselves can be made out of cotton embroidery floss, silk thread, rayon thread, yarn and even filaments of wire.

The decorative embroidery stitches of Chinese embroidery usually make complex depictions of animals and plants that are common in their environments. They tend to create graceful, flowing images well matched to their fine textures. The resulting textiles are strikingly beautiful.

Cross-stitches are very common decorative embroidery stitches. In cross-stitch tiny xs are created to form simple images. During the Victorian era is considered especially important for girls to be skilled at cross-stitch. Cross stitch patterns are usually drawn on graph paper or red from instructive lists.
